MerCruiser Bravo Drive Rebuild

The Bravo is the bigger, higher-horsepower MerCruiser drive. A rebuild here is about bearing preload and gear pattern done exactly right.

The MerCruiser Bravo family, Bravo One, Two and Three, is the heavier-duty drive built for higher horsepower and bigger boats. A Bravo rebuild means a full teardown, new bearings and seals, gearset inspection, and careful preload and shim setup, because these drives carry more load than an Alpha. Brad rebuilds all three Bravo variants and knows how each is geared and cooled. Ship it in nationwide or drop it off locally.

Signs a Bravo needs rebuilding

  • Milky oil or water in the drive from a failed seal
  • Metal on the drain magnet from a loaded gearset wearing
  • A growl or whine that rises with rpm under load
  • Vibration at cruise or a felt clunk on the shift
  • Play in the driveshaft or prop shaft by hand
  • A high-hour drive behind a big-block that has never been apart

What Brad checks rebuilding a Bravo

  • Confirm Bravo One, Two or Three, since gearing differs
  • Pressure and vacuum test the drive for leak points
  • Set driveshaft and pinion bearing preload to spec
  • Inspect the gearset and clutch dogs under magnification
  • Shim the gears to the correct contact pattern
  • Check the dual-prop hub and hardware on a Bravo Three

The fix and what to expect

A Bravo rebuild replaces the bearings and seals, any worn gear or clutch dog, and sets the bearing preload and gear pattern to MerCruiser spec, which matters more on a Bravo than on a lighter drive. It is then pressure tested. Because the Bravo carries higher loads, getting preload and shims right is what makes it run quiet and last. Turnaround is one to two weeks from arrival, and Brad quotes the real wear after teardown before any parts go in.

Bravo Three counter-rotation and preload matter more

The Bravo Three runs two counter-rotating props on concentric shafts, which is why it grips so well and why its rebuild is more involved than a single-prop Bravo One. There are more bearings and seals in the lower unit and the shaft setup is tighter, so preload has to be dialed in or it howls and wears fast. All Bravo drives run their raw water pump on the engine rather than in the drive, unlike the Alpha, so a Bravo cooling issue points at the engine-mounted pump, not the drive. Brad sets preload and shims by measurement, not by feel, on every Bravo.
